Cluster «Rising flood risk, decreasing slope stability and more frequent mass movements»

As a result of the altered precipitation and runoff conditions, more frequent and intense flood events are expected. Special attention must also be paid to the effects of surface runoff. In the Alps, melting glaciers and thawing permafrost lead to a decrease in slope stability and thus to more landslides, rock falls, rock avalanches and debris flows. The risk of landslides is also increased even at lower altitudes by possibly increasing heavy precipitation and the rising snow line. More frequent floods and mass movements can endanger settlements, transport routes, infrastructure and agricultural land. Even though protection against natural hazards is already comprehensively perceived in Switzerland, the changes pose additional challenges. These also affect the civil protection organs.
