Major regions

Climate change is evidenced to varying extents in the five major regions of Switzerland. This page provides an overview of the changes that can be expected, along with the risks and opportunities for the regions of the Jura, the Swiss plateau, the pre-Alps, the Alps and the south side of the Alps.

The major regions used in the Climate Scenarios CH2018 correspond to the definition of regions by the Federal Office for the Environment FOEN from 2013. These major regions differ slightly from the current FOEN regions as well as from the MeteoSwiss forecast regions.

Climate change in the Swiss cantons

The development of adaptation and mitigation strategies in the Swiss cantons relies on robust information on both ongoing and future climate change patterns not only at the national scale but also at cantonal level. Led by MeteoSwiss, this information has been produced and bundled in cantonal fact sheets.

Risks and opportunities

As part of a comprehensive climate risk analysis, the Federal Office for the Environment documented the climate-related risks and opportunities for the six major regions of Jura, Swiss Plateau, Foothills of the Alps, Alps, South of the Alps and large urban zones and published them in 2017.
