Cluster «Increasing summer drought»

Although Switzerland has considerable water resources, local water scarcity in the summer can be expected in the future. With increasing warming, less water is bound in the form of snow and glacial ice, resulting in natural water reservoirs to recede for the summer months. At the same time, prolonged periods of drought are likely to occur more frequently. In addition, there is a sharp increase in water demand on hot days. These changes affect ecosystems and all water users, especially agriculture, which relies on a sufficient water supply for crops. Especially along small and medium-sized waters, water withdrawals during drought must be limited. This can lead to competitive situations and conflicts among water users.
