What are the risks and opportunities associated with climate change?

Climate change has many negative consequences for Switzerland, but also certain positive ones. Since climate change can affect both the frequency and the intensity of an event, it also alters the size of the risk or the opportunity associated with the event. Climate change thus brings with it both risks and opportunities for Switzerland, to which it will be necessary to adapt.

The Climate change adaptation strategy of the Federal Council is based on a risk approach, and aims to minimise the risks, exploit the opportunities and increase the country’s ability to adapt. In the context of various case studies, the Federal government has also determined the risks and opportunities of climate change for different regions in Switzerland, and summarised these in a synthesis report for the whole of Switzerland. In order to implement concrete adaptation measures at the local level, however, detailed clarifications are needed that take account of local conditions.
