Options for action

Measured by the slow processes in the forest, climatic changes threaten to take place at a rate that overwhelms natural adaptation processes. Important forest services such as protection against natural hazards could be reduced or fail. Also to be expected are impacts on wood production, with which many jobs are associated, both in indigenous forest management and timber industry.

Fields of action and the Confederation’s goals

Critical forest preserves

  • The mass propagation of bark beetles and other harmful organisms and the resulting damage is prevented.
  • Forests are adaptable, stable and sufficiently rejuvenated.

Tree stands with high proportions of coniferous wood at lower elevations

  • The mass propagation of bark beetles and other harmful organisms and the resulting damage is prevented.
  • Stocks are transferred to robust mixed forests with adequate proportions of adaptable tree species.

Climate-sensitive forest sites

  • Flammable material (dead trees) in vulnerable locations (e.g., near settlements) is removed.
  • Forest sites are rejuvenated with adaptable tree species.

Other forest sites

  • Forest sites are rejuvenated with resilient / adaptive species

Priority themes: Forest functions and climate change

Climate change affects the forest functions, forest health, the distribution of tree species and the forest as carbon sink. Recommendations for adapted forest management are being developed.
